The Utaku family are a matriarchal family from the Unicorn Clan.

When the Unicorn Clan was founded, the Kami Shinjo earned oaths of fealty from both Ide and Iuchi, but never received one from Utaku. Regardless, Utaku behaved as if she had sworn fealty and, for her part, Shinjo treated her as her right hand. To this day, the Utaku family are somewhat reclusive and use their words very carefully. While they understand the subtleties of court life far better than the other bushi families of the Unicorn and frequently possess natural beauty and grace, they find the etiquette and frivolities of court dull and annoying.
Internally, all power in the family is consolidated in the hands of women, and only women are allowed to learn their fighting techniques and fight from horseback. Men in the family are generally relegated to caring for the horses, and are the finest horse breeders in Rokugan. The Utaku women are the elite cavalry of the Unicorn, itself the clan possessed of the best cavalry in Rokugan.

This family was originally named the Otaku family in the AEG version of the CCG, but this was later changed and given an in-world explanation for the change due to its unfortunate meaning in Japanese. Fantasy Flight Games has opted to avoid using the original name in the first place in the Living Card Game.
